Why can’t I drag a contact into a group in Apple address book?

In Apple Contacts you can drag any contact into a group to add them to that group. Sometimes dragging the contact into a group does not work. The way to fix this is to quit Apple Contacts and re-open it and the problem should be resolved.

This worked a couple of times, but the problem continues, and now no matter how many times I close and reopen, I cannot drag my contacts in a group. I should not have to close and reopen over and over. Somethings totally wrong with this program, MAC please fix it!

Quitting and reopening does not work for me and hasn’t for a long time. Big Sur 11.7.3. My way around it is to go to the contact on my iPhone and at the very bottom of the contact card is ‘INCLUDED IN LISTS’ and you can add the card to a list (aka group).

Carol, thank you! The iPhone workaround worked.

This is also happening to me and I am going crazy. Something has happened to this program. Help!

  4. All the problems above keep happening. It is also possible for one person to be added to list twice! Hugely frustrating as this drag and drop has worked for decades. Now it usually does not.

I hope this will be fixed soon. Distribution lists are taking forever to compile when you have to quit Contacts because it does allow you to drag in the distribution list. It is especially frustrating since my distribution list when I got a new laptop and the migration of the data lost all of my distribution lists…

I have the same problem on my MacBook Air. Dragging and dropping contacts to a list and renaming contacts is extremely inconsistent. Occasionally it works. More often than not it does. Shutting down and restarting is only useful for a very few drag and drops or renames. This is no way to be productive if you have to go through ten time-consuming steps when you cshould just drag and drop. It’s not a user fix. Apple should investigate do an update to correct this problem.

Same problem. Very frustrating. Apple: FIX IT!!!!

Same issue on my MacBook Air
Unbelievable that apple has not addressed it after all the complaints ?

In addition to the above, I’ve had a problem where I go to add a new contact and when I start typing into the fields, it switches to a different contact.

This only happens when I have a unique iCloud Group (not “All iCloud”) selected and attempt to add a new contact. If I have “All iCloud” selected, no problems, but then I can’t drag the new contact into the unique group.

I can always drag an iCloud contact into my Gmail Contacts list. I can also consistently drag a Gmail contact into “All iCloud,” but not into a unique iCloud group.

So it appears to be a problem within the iCloud groups interface, and not necessarily the Contacts app, itself.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I’m new to this board and don’t know if Apple reads it. Does anyone have a better contact for where/how to provide feedback directly to Apple? I’m sure I could look it up, but just asking in case anyone else has the answer without having to look it up.

  10. Thanks for the iPhone workaround. It does seem like this is an important problem for Apple to address.

Same problem. Quitting Contacts did not help. I restarted the computer, and that did not resolve the issue either. Will watch for updates.

Same problem. The iPhone workaround worked for me. All doing it on iCloud also works

  13. There are two specific names in my contact list that I cannot add to a specific group. One of them I cannot add to any group. I cannot figure out why. No amount of restarting anything helps.

Same for me with new Macbook Pro M2 with Ventura 13.4.1. Is the machine or the software version? It always worked for years before.
B*****y infuriating – is this progress?

Same problem, Macbook Pro 14” 2021

    MacOs 13.4.1 (c) (22F770820d)

Same problem! Been trying to add 3 names to a group. One was successful, the other two will not go. I’ve tried shutting down Contacts, no help!

    1. It’s definitely a bug in Apple Contacts. I find that quitting Contacts and restarting it usually fixes the probmel.
      I guess you’ve tried a computer restart?

The restart holding down the shift key works, but only briefly. Then the problems starts again. Restart holding shift key need again. This is very frustrating. You would think Apple would fix this problem.

same problem on my MacBook air. Come Apple… this shouldn’t be that hard to fix. This is a problem I’d expect from Windows – not from Apple.
