Over the past couple of months our family has discovered a strange little problem. Our emails have been getting mixed up! My daughters have been sending emails, but the replies have been coming to me. I have been sending emails, and they have appeared as coming from my wife. And in the worst case, some emails have been sent from a separate ical calendar that I don’t even check.

I have finally figured out what is happening, and I can’t believe I didn’t notice it earlier. Read on for what’s causing the problem and how to fix it!

I have a friend who has just changed from a PC to a Mac and she has asked for an alternative to Quicken. Apparently the OS X version of Quicken does not have support for Australian customisations such as Australian banks, GST, BAS etc. The PC version of Quicken did. So do any Aussie users know of some good software for the Mac that works in Australia?

We live in a post-DVD world now but there are still occasions where you may need to burn a DVD.  My son recently played in a piano concert and he wanted to burn a DVD of the concert for his grandfather.   iDVD  is the best option for doing this. Here’s how to get hold of it and what it can do.

osx

Apple releases a major update of OS X every year or so and for the past 10 years I have just done an automatic update, installing the new OS X on top of the old version and keeping all the existing applications and settings.  When I upgraded to El Capitan I decided to do a completely fresh installation. I started with a new hard drive (SSD).  I installed OS X.  Then I copied everything across  manually.  This took about half a day and some things didn’t work but overall I think it has been a good spring clean. This article is not so much a step-by-step guide but a  rough summary of what I did.

You can imagine with a blog like this one that as an author I want a way to write new posts that is both easy and fast.

Macintoshhowto.com is run by a piece of software called WordPress. WordPress is a little bit clunky and so there have been several attempts to write software that will simplify the blogging process and automatically upload your post to WordPress.  Over the past few weeks I have  trialled various pieces of blog writing software and here’s what I found.

Yosemite has just been released. Like any new OSX, it has various problems with the first release, so unless you really need it, I’d wait for the first minor update to come out to fix some of the buys.

If you decide to install Yosemite, here are a few things to be aware of before you upgrade.

  • By default Yosemite will default to encrypt your entire Hard Drive. This potentially means if you forget your password ALL YOUR FILES WILL BE UNAVAILABLE.  Make sure to turn this off unless you understand the consequences. I think this should have been opt in rather than opt out.
  • Dragon Naturally Speaking There were some issues but this has been resolved.
  • Fuji Xerox printers don’t work.   Here is a workaround.
  • non Apple SSD as startup disk with TRIM enabled – there could be issues. See here for a more detailed explanation and here for a discussion.
  • Problems with Gmail and Apple mail where you cannot log in to check your mail – password error. Tis can be solved by deleting your gmail account from Apple mail then putting the Gmail settings in again.

Here’s how to get the FTP server running in OSX 10.9 Mavericks. This is advanced and not everyone will need the FTP server. The only thing I was use it for is to receive incoming scans from my Fuji/Xerox network scanner.
