It can be a bit of a pain trying to print from you iOS devices or an Android phone.  Apple have helped by introducing Airprint,  but not all printers support Airprint so in some ways this has made the problem worse.  Yet again Google have come to the rescue. Google allow you to set up any of your printers as a ‘Google cloud printer.’  Here’s how.

Preview app

This might be a bit obscure, but if you ever need to do it then this will save you a lot of time! Today I had 33 separate pdf files that I wanted to print out.  I wanted them all printed out in alphabetical order. It took me 3 attempts.  Here is how to get them to open in Preview in alphabetical order first go so you can print them in bulk.

If you have ever designed a colour document on your computer and then printed it out on your inkjet or laser printer you may have noticed that the colours come out slightly different.  This is partly to do with the fact that  printing with ink on a piece of paper is a different process to creating colour on a computer monitor,  but it is possible to calibrate your monitor so that the colours match up as closely as they can.  This article gives you some tips on basic monitor colour calibration.

There appears to be a compatibility issue with Mac OSX lion and lots of printers.   (Talked about here on the apple support pages)  The printer may or may not work properly, but you will get an error that says “The optical photoconductor needs to be replaced.” If you see this error it may be that your drum needs replacing, but it could also be a communication problem with the printer.

When I try to print on my new Fuji Xerox document C4350 last week I got an error saying “The optical photoconductor needs to be replaced.” and the printer would not even print.  If you play around with a different print setting (e.g. USB, Jetdirect, LPD, IPP) you may be able to get the printer working (still with the error!) till Apple repairs the problem. This hint is not strictly Macintosh, but it’s so good I have to write it up. Did you know you can get what they call a Continuous inking system (CIS) for most big name inkjet printers? It continually feeds the ink into the printer so you don’t have to change the cartridges! You can see the big containers of ink in the photo above – they sit next to the printer.
