Our Church is developing a phone app and as part of the process we needed to get a DUNS number. We were taken to a site called “dun&bradstreet” but there was no place to get a DUNS number if you are not from the USA or Canada. Do you need a DUNS number? Chances are, you already have one!

An update on What is causing the iOS11 battery drain problems.

The problem did not clear up. I’ve been in contact with Apple support. They had me do a complete factory reset on my iPhone. They accessed it remotely and did some battery tests. The hardware is fine. The battery dropped from 100% to 75% while I was on the phone to Apple support! I have every possible feature turned off, no mobile data, no Location Services, no Bluetooth, no Background App refresh etc.  I now am waiting a few hours for the phone to be able to be able to collect some usage data and then Apple tech support will call me back. I’ll keep you updated.

Another Update: The factory reset did not work. Apple remotely ran some more diagnostics on my phone.  They did a test where I had to let the phone battery drain for 4 hours without using any apps in airplane mode. Then Apple got me to download a diagnostic app to my computer which downloaded a 350Mb file from my iPhone and these results were sent to Apple engineers who are analysing them. Apple will call me back soon.

Yet Another Update: Apple need to do more tests. I took my phone into an Apple repairer today.

Final Update: Apple Sent me a new iPhone. So there’s a major problem with iOS11 that can cause an iPhone do die such that Apple need to replace it to fix the problem. If you have an iPhone SE or 6 that’s battery life is problematic since iOS11 and it’s under warranty I’d suggest you take it back.

My iPhone has been using huge amounts of battery power for almost 2 weeks now – ever since I upgraded to iOS11.  It can drop 20% of it’s battery percentage in an hour and it’s using so much power that it takes 5 hours to charge! I’m keen to see who else is having this problem and whether it’s resolved itself for you.

After some reading I am hoping that this increase in power usage on iOS11 is caused by Spotlight reindexing.  This would also make sense as to why all the power saving measures such as low power mode etc make no difference.  It also makes sense as to why the battery drain doesn’t seem to be tied to any particular application.  If this is the case, all we need to do is wait a few days and the iPhone should finish indexing and eventually return to its normal self. If however it’s some kind of a bug in iOS11, we may need to wait for a fix from Apple. If it is caused form Spotlight indexing, waiting should eventually fix it.  If you are camping or in a situation where you you need the phone and cannot put up with the battery drain you have 3 options:

UPDATE: It’s not caused by Spotlight indexing. I turned off all indexing and the problem is still there.

I’m contacting Apple Support and will keep you updated.

Many iPhone users are noticing a fast drain in battery life in iOS 11. You can check which apps are using your battery by going to Settings –> Battery and then scrolling down to where it says ‘BATTERY USAGE.’ You will see a screen like this:

This is a very handy chart that lets you see which apps are using your battery. For me, it’s Google Play Music. I admit, I do use the Google Play Music App a lot to listen to music.

If you click on the App in question, it will tell you how much you have used it. I clicked on Google Play Music and it told me that I have used it for 2.3 hours on the screen and 4 minutes in the background over the last 24 hours.

Click on the app name to see whether the usage is when the app is on screen or in the background.

You can look at your battery drain over the past 24 hours, or the past 7 days.

For hints on how to save battery life, check out “iOS11 battery drain problems”.

Today Apple released iOS 10.2 and sadly we are still stuck with this childish cartoon popup when you click on a word in a text message. I have had numerous people complain about this so I’m not the only one who thinks it turns the iPhone into a very expensive kid’s toy. You can’t copy part of a message so if you need to copy a verification code or address into another app – too bad. For a workaround look here.

inbox

Google Inbox has become my preferred email app for my iPhone. I have been using it alongside Apple Mail for about a year but in the last couple of months I have completely ditched the Apple Mail app in favour of Google Inbox.  It’s just lovely to use, where do I start?
