You will now be able to see the little padlock before the website in the address bar (if you use Safari) or the green ‘secure’ sign (if you use Chrome). This means that the link from the web server to your browser is secure and no one can intercept the data. If you notice any problems with the site in the next week or two please let me know!
If you run a WordPress self-hosted website and you want to know the rough steps involved in making a WordPress website secure, here they are. Some of it was a little over my head but I got there in the end. There were lots of websites explaining how to do this but they only had 2 or 3 steps. Here are my 10 steps!
On September 15th and 16th Bluehost are offering a massive web hosting special. You can sign up for $2.95/month. This is a crazy cheap price. It includes a free domain name. I use Bluehost to host this Macintosh website as well as my other websites (dubbo.org, wayneconnor.com, dpc.org.au and more). This is much less than I pay! Macintoshhowto.com has been averaging 150,000 visits a month lately. It sits on a server with 5 or 6 other web sites but I thought it deserved a server of it’s own. I moved it across it today. You can read more about it here.
I use bluehost.com to host the macintoshhowto.com website. This means I pay blue host a monthly fee and they provide hard disk space and computing power to run the website. To actually run the website I use some software called Wordpress. WordPress is a great platform to host a blog or website from – it’s very easy to set up, and most web hosting packages will include a one step wordpress install like the one I describe here. Here’s how to set up wordpress using bluehost. Bluehost is very cheap and reliable. I’d say as long as your wordpress website is getting under 50,000 visits a month bluehost should do the job. Macintoshhowto is just starting to reach about 80,000 hits a month and I’ve been hitting the limit of bluehost so I’ve needed to go over some things and prune some plug-ins to keep the site running smoothly.
