How to use an Apple infrared remote with your macbook

If you use your macbook to listen to music, here’s a great tip. You can use your Apple remote (that comes with Apple TV or that you can buy separately on the Apple store) to turn the volume up and down and also to skip, pause etc. But firstly you need to pair the remote to your laptop. Here’s how.

Grab the remote, point it to your laptop, hold down the ‘MENU’ button and the right arrow button at the same time.

After approx 2-3 seconds the logo below will appear on your screen. This means the Apple remote has been paired!

To unpair a remote, go to System Preferences, Security, General, Advanced, and click on ‘Unpair’.

If the Macbook is quite new (from 2012 until now) it does not have built-in infrared receiver.
However if you still want to use the Apple Remote you can use a SmartGUS infrared USB receiver which will bring back full compatibility with the legacy built in receiver.
