The number of external displays is limited by the processor not the computer. This includes all ports in use, thunderbolt and HDMI. You can add extra displays using 3rd party hardware, this is how many displays using a standard computer.
Macs with built-in display
(Macbook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac)
| Processer | Maximum number of external displays |
| M1, M2 | 1 |
| M1 Pro | 2 |
| M3 | 2 |
| M2 Pro, M3 Pro | 2 |
| M1 Max, M2 Max, M3 Max | 4 |
Macs without built-in display
(Mac mini/Mac Studio)
These give an extra external display as there is no monitor.
So add one to the above table.

| M2 Pro Mac mini | 3 |
