Apple sometimes offer a free 3 month or 1 year Apple TV+ subscription when you buy a new device (phone or computer). Here’s the catch, it’s only available once in your lifetime per family. I was on support with Apple today and they confirmed this. If one family member uses the free subscription, it doesn’t matter how many computers or phones you purchase. It’s literally a once in a lifetime offer!
We used our free trial 2 years ago, so my new MacBook Pro does not get a trial. So my tip would be don’t waste your free Apple TV on a 3 month trial. Wait until Apple have a 1 year trial. (It varies what they offer). Also, you have up to 3 months after purchasing a new computer to activate your free Apple TV trial.
In Apple TV there’s an option called ‘Computer’ where you can stream movies that are stored on your computer. But these movies need to be shared from your computer to Apple TV. In Catalina Apple changed how you turn this sharing on and off from your Computer.
Previously you need to go into iTunes and select ‘Turn on Home Sharing’ from your iTunes App. In Catalina it’s been moved from iTunes into the System Preferences. (It’s not been moved to the TV app – that’s where I went looking!)
To turn on sharing for your media Library you need to go into System Preferences, then ‘Sharing’ and then select the box that says ‘Media Sharing’ and then select the box that says ‘Home Sharing.’ Now all the movies that were in your old iTunes Library will be available on your Apple TV.
Turn on Home Sharing to see movies in Apple TV
If you want to add files from a media server or external Hard Disk to be able to view them on your Apple TV as well, you can leave them in place on your media server but you need to drag them into the new TV app on your computer. Before you do this make sure you unselect the option that says ‘Copy files to media folder when adding to Library.’ If that box is selected it will try to copy your movies from your external drive to your computer’s internal drive, and fill it up. If you leave that box unchecked, it will make a link to your external movies (so that you can play them from Apple TV) but it will keep them on the media drive.
Turn off ‘Copy Files…’ to access files on an external drive without copying them across.
I’m a great fan of the Apple TV so I’ve been waiting a while for the release of the new model. The day it arrived I went to the Apple store but just as I was about to add one to my cart, I had to choose between a 32GB or 64GB model. (Apple’s first mistake. This is way over complicating things). So I went to check out the tech specs and it was there that I noticed something so stupid that it is giving me flashbacks of 1985-97 apple years… The Apple TV has no audio out. No I am not making this up. The new Apple TV has no audio output. No line out. No optical out. The audio signal comes only on the HDMI cable to your TV.
I just set up my Apple TV and was very surprised that when I played a DVD from my Macbook it came out all grey on the Apple TV. This thread claims that you cannot play a DVD on Apple TV due to copyright. Here are two ways to get around Apple’s DVD viewing protection.
