Showing a preview of your image on the desktop file icon – broken

You can get previews of your images on the OSX desktop like this:

Mine were broken and just displaying the generic preview icon. Here’s how I fixed it.

The way to display a preview is to go to the ‘View’ menu and select ‘Show View Options’ and then ‘Show Icon Preview’, but my icons were still not showing.

The fix was to force quit a program called ‘quicklook’ then restart the finder.

  1. Open “activity monitor’
  2. Find com.apple.quicklook…
  3. Force Quit
  4. Fine ‘Finder’
  5. Force Quit

My icons were rebuilt and worked!

Step 1: Force quit this process.

Step 2: Force quit finder.

That fixed it for me.

There were other solutions on the web that did not work. One was go to ~Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.finder.plist file. That didn’t fix it.
